When Goshen Was Not Enough

Goshen was a place of remarkable provision and protection. While judgment fell upon Egypt, God made a distinction between the land of Egypt and the place where His people lived.

But then came a night when living in Goshen was not enough.

God warned that judgment would pass through the land. Every household needed a spotless lamb, and its blood had to be placed upon the doorposts. God did not tell the Israelites to trust their location, their heritage, their good intentions, or even their identity as His chosen people. They were to shelter beneath the blood.

“Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you.” — Exodus 12:13 (NKJV)

That first Passover pointed forward to Jesus Christ.

“For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.” — 1 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

HeavenSpun Home may represent a modern-day Goshen—a place of faithful preparation, provision, and trust in God—but neither this home nor any other place can save us.

Only Jesus Christ can.

Why We Need a Savior: We All Stand Guilty Before God

God created us in His image to know Him, love Him, and walk with Him. But every one of us has sinned and fallen short of His holiness.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

Sin is more than making mistakes. It is rebellion against our holy Creator. It separates us from God, and its rightful consequence is death and judgment.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23 (NKJV)

We cannot make ourselves right with God through good works, church attendance, religious knowledge, family heritage, or sincere intentions. Just as living in Goshen could not protect a household on the night of judgment, nothing we possess or accomplish can shelter us from the judgment our sins deserve.

We need a Savior.

God Provided the Lamb

God did not leave us without hope. Because of His great love and mercy, He sent His Son. Jesus Christ, God the Son, came in the flesh and lived the sinless life we could never live. On the cross, He willingly took our guilt upon Himself and suffered the judgment our sins deserved.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

Jesus truly died and was buried. On the third day, He rose bodily from the grave, conquering sin and death.

“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and…He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (NKJV)

The blood of the Passover lamb was a sign pointing forward to the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He is the Lamb of God who gave His life so that sinners could be forgiven and reconciled to God.

Salvation Is God’s Gift

Salvation cannot be earned. It is God’s gift, given by grace and received through faith in Jesus Christ.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith…not of works, lest anyone should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9 (NKJV)

To receive that gift, we must repent—turning from our sin and toward God—and place our trust in Jesus Christ alone.

We are not saved because we live in a Goshen, repeat certain words, perform enough good deeds, or became religious. We are saved when we believe the Gospel, turn to Christ, and trust in who He is and what He accomplished through His death and resurrection.

“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” — Romans 10:9 (NKJV)

Jesus did not merely show us one possible way back to God. He is the only Way.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6 (NKJV)

Will You Shelter Beneath His Blood?

The Israelites could hear God’s warning, know about the lamb, and understand His instructions—but each household still had to respond in faith. The same is true for us.

Knowing about Jesus is not the same as belonging to Him. God calls us to repent, believe the Gospel, and entrust ourselves completely to Jesus Christ.

Have you placed your faith in Him?

If you have never done so, you may come to Him now. You do not need polished words. Speak honestly to God, confess your sin, and place your trust in Jesus Christ.

A Prayer of Faith

A prayer cannot save us; only Jesus saves us. These words are simply a way to confess the sincere repentance and faith before God.

Heavenly Father,

You are holy, righteous, merciful, and worthy of all honor.

I acknowledge that I am a sinner and cannot save myself.

I have fallen short of Your glory and deserve Your judgment.

I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died for my sins, was buried, and rose again.

I repent of my sins and turn to You. Please forgive me, cleanse me, and make me new.

I confess Jesus Christ as Lord and place my trust in Him alone as my Savior.

Help me, and I will follow Jesus faithfully and live according to Your Word.

Thank You for Your mercy, Your forgiveness, and the gift of eternal life.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
